Dr Ramy Badawi is one of the leading interventional cardiologist in Hawaii. He specializes in catheter-based procedures for the treatment of coronary artery disease in Hawaii. Until now Dr Ramy Badawi has treated thousands of patients with the condition in Hawaii. In fact he is a pioneer and leading specialist in Hawaii in treating patients with higher risk and more complex coronary artery disease.
His subspecialty interest is in the treatment of complex and high risk coronary artery disease using coronary stents including: coronary chronic total occlusions (CTO) and complex higher risk (and indicated) patients (CHIP). Coronary stent procedures (aka percutaneous coronary intervention or PCI) offer an alternative catheter-based therapy to patients who cannot undergo coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery.
Coronary Artery Disease (CAD) is the build up of cholesterol fat plaque in the blood vessels supplying the heart.
Generally the people concerned will experience chest pain or breathlessness coming on only with exertion (angina). But some may experience a sudden onset of crushing chest pain heralding a heart attack (myocardial infarction).
CAD causing angina can be treated with medications, or “percutaneous coronary intervention” (PCI), also known as the insertion of metal tubes in the heart to restore flow to the heart , or “coronary artery bypass surgery” (CABG) also known as open heart surgery.
“Percutaneous coronary intervention”, previously called “percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty” (PTCA) or angioplasty for short, refers to standard practice of inserting cylindrically shaped metal tube into the coronary arteries to restore blood flow to the heart.
“Coronary artery bypass graft” surgery are more commonly referred to as “open heart surgery” or “bypass surgery”. The procedure involves on the one hand the redirection of the internal mammary artery supplying the chest wall to left anterior descending artery supplying the heart thus “bypassing” and blockages of this critical heart artery. And on the other hand the harvesting of the saphenous vein graft of the leg to be used to bypass other heart arteries.
